Apply

The state of North Carolina uses a centralized system called the Residency Determination Service (RDS) to make all residency decisions. Campuses do not determine residency status—we receive your result from RDS.

BEFORE YOU START

Before beginning your residency application, it helps to have the following ready:

  • Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN (if applicable)
  • North Carolina address and residency history
  • Parent/guardian information (if you are a dependent student)

STEP 1: Complete Your Residency Application (RDS)

Go to the Residency Determination Service website and complete the online interview.

  • During this process, you will receive your Residency Certification Number (RCN)
    • Save your RCN. You will need it to complete your process with UNC Charlotte

Step 2: Submit Your RCN to UNC Charlotte

Once you receive your RCN, submit it to us, so we can update your student record with your residency status.

If you’re applying or admitted to Charlotte:

  • Enter your RCN in your admissions application or portal

If you’re already enrolled at Charlotte:

  • Log in to MyCharlotte
  • Select the Student Services / Student Account tab
  • Select the Residency Determination Service link
  • Enter your Residency Certification Number

Step 3: Check Your Status

After submitting your RCN:

  • Your residency status will be processed and applied to your record
  • Processing may take several business days

You will be classified as:

  • Resident (in-state tuition) or
  • Non-resident (out-of-state tuition)

AFTER YOU APPLY

  • RDS reviews the information you provided
  • You may be asked to submit additional documentation
    • If requested, documents must be submitted within the RDS stated deadline
  • UNC Charlotte receives your final residency status directly from RDS
